About The Department

The department of Physiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study of function of the human body and the regulation of the different body systems. The department of Physiology at St. Peter’s Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Hosur features well-equipped labs, high-Tech air conditioned lecture theaters, demonstration rooms, qualified & experienced medical faculty and technical staff.

  • The principle level of focus on physiology is that of organs and body systems.
  • It involves teaching undergraduate students Medical Physiology is to provide a comprehensive knowledge of the integrated functions of the organ systems, which in turn helps understanding the basis of health and disease.
  • With respect to the knowledge domain, students get equipped with the knowledge of the coordinated body function, the relative contribution of each organ system to the maintenance of milieu interior, aspects of normal growth and development, physiological responses and adaptations to environmental conditions, the knowledge of the physiological principles underlying pathogenesis as well as treatment of disease.

Vision & Mission

Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry seeks to advance the understanding of chemical structures and processes that constitute health and disease and underlie the transformations between these two states in the human body. It forms the foundation of basic medical sciences.

  • Department of Biochemistry is involved in teaching, conducting research and maintaining high standards in diagnostic services.
  • The Department of Biochemistry has the facility to conduct specialized tests for hormones, tumor markers, Vitamins, clinical toxicology and basic metabolic screening in labs that have the cutting edge technology analyzers. The faculty and students are encouraged to do research and publish scientific papers.
  • Department carry out investigations to rule out diabetes, cholesterol levels, renal function tests, liver function tests, anaemia, complete blood count, typhoid, dengue fever tests, etc.
  • The department invites clinicians to discuss case scenarios that integrate and highlight the role of biochemical mechanisms in health and causation of diseases. This promotes better clinical understanding among students and researchers.
  • The Biochemistry section of the Diagnostic Laboratory is well-equipped with state of the art facilities, latest equipments, and skilled laboratory personnel and offers round the clock services in an effort to provide quality health care service to patients.

  • With respect to skills domain, the students will be able to conduct experiments, designed for study of physiological phenomena and interpret experimental/ investigative data ,distinguish between normal and abnormal data derived as a result of testes, which he or she performs and observes in the laboratory
  • Students have access to a hematology lab, amphibian lab, mammalian lab and a clinical lab.
  • Additionally, there is a scope for neurophysiology, respiratory physiology are used mainly for research. An autonomic function lab also enables diagnostic patient care.
  • The department also has complete access to the cardiology & respiratory lab at the Hospital.

Anatomy

This department works closely with the other preclinical departments through horizontal & vertical integration to offer Medical doctors a strong foundation.

  • The department organizes several hands-on workshops on basic pelvic anatomy and internal artery ligation, and basics of human genetics in collaboration with other departments.
  • It conducts various academic competitions including model making, histology drawing and dissections for the undergraduate students.
  • Computer assisted learning (CAL) or skills lab allows students to create reports on their cadaveric studies more efficiently.
  • Along with a fully functional dissection hall, students are offered the opportunity for research activities.
  • The Cadaveric Research and Training Unit at the Advanced Learning Center further enhance students’ learning experience.

Core competencies

  • Cadaveric dissection
  • Video recording and demonstration
  • Histology tissue processing
  • Ordinary and special staining techniques
  • Museum specimen preparation
  • Tissue culture
