About The Department

The Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy is dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centred care for a wide spectrum of skin, hair, nail and sexually transmitted diseases, as well as leprosy and other dermatological disorders.

The department combines clinical expertise, modern diagnostic facilities, procedural dermatology and aesthetic services to deliver quality healthcare. It is committed to early diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, patient education and the promotion of skin health and wellness.

In addition to clinical services, the department plays an important role in undergraduate medical education, postgraduate training, clinical research and community outreach. Through academic activities and awareness programmes, it strives to develop competent, compassionate and ethically responsible medical professionals while improving public awareness of common and neglected dermatological conditions

MD/MS in Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy

Undergraduate Programme (UG)

The department provides undergraduate medical training in dermatology, venereology and leprosy, equipping medical students with essential knowledge and clinical skills for the diagnosis, management and prevention of common skin diseases, sexually transmitted infections and leprosy.

Postgraduate Programme (PG – MD Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy)

The department offers postgraduate training with an annual intake of 2 MD postgraduate students, subject to applicable institutional and regulatory approvals.

Current Postgraduate Student Strength

 First-year postgraduate students: 2 seats annually

 Second-year postgraduate students: 2

 Final-year postgraduate students: 2

 Total postgraduate students in the second and final years: 4, in addition to the incoming annual batch

The postgraduate programme emphasises comprehensive clinical training, dermatopathology, diagnostic procedures, procedural dermatology, research methodology, academic presentations and evidence-based patient management.

The department provides a range of clinical, diagnostic and procedural services for the comprehensive management of dermatological conditions.

A. Clinical Services

 General dermatology outpatient services

 Diagnosis and management of acute and chronic skin diseases

 Hair and scalp disorder evaluation

 Nail disorder assessment and management

 Pediatric dermatology

 Acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis and pigmentary disorder clinics/services

 Evaluation and management of autoimmune and immunobullous disorders

 Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections

 Leprosy diagnosis, treatment and follow-up

 Skin allergy and drug reaction evaluation

 Chronic ulcer and other complex dermatological condition assessment

B. Diagnostic Facilities

 KOH mount examination for fungal infections

 Wood’s lamp examination

 Tzanck smear

 Slit-skin smear examination for leprosy, where indicated

 Gram staining and saline mount microscopy, where indicated

 Skin biopsy and histopathological evaluation through appropriate laboratory services

 Clinical and dermoscopic assessment, as available

C. Advanced Procedural and Surgical Dermatology

 CO₂ laser procedures for dermatological indications

 Electrocautery and electrosurgical procedures for appropriate benign skin lesions

 Skin biopsy and minor dermatological surgical procedures

 Removal of selected skin tags, warts and other benign lesions

 Intralesional therapies for selected dermatological conditions

 Comedone extraction and other indicated acne procedures

 Chemical peels for selected acne, pigmentation and photoageing concerns

 Microneedling and other aesthetic procedures, as available and clinically indicated

 Scar and pigmentary disorder management

 Cryotherapy, where available

 Nail Surgeries for nail disorders

D. Aesthetic Dermatology Services

The department provides or facilitates appropriate aesthetic dermatology services focused on skin health, rejuvenation and the management of selected cosmetic concerns. These may include acne scar management, chemical peels, pigmentation treatments, selected laser procedures and other minimally invasive procedures, subject to availability and clinical suitability.
