Vision & Mission

Community Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine is known for its value-based education and contribution to all strata of the society. Through teaching & training with research initiatives to curb emerging global pandemic, the department contributes significantly to developing competent physicians of first contact.

  • Our institutes provide treatment at doorsteps for patients at villages and urban areas through UHTC and RHTC and refer the needed patients to the parent hospital for high end surgical & medical treatment.
  • Undergraduates are trained in community action and taught how to organize health centres and initiate health programmes.
  • Health camps and community awareness programmes provide an accurate understanding of Promotive, curative and preventive medicine to the students..
  • A large focus is placed on learning by doing and students are encouraged to interact with village panchayat members and local residents.
  • Students have to undergo a 2 months internship in this department – 1 month in an urban health centre and 1 month in a rural health centre, where they live with the local community, and learn and practice under the local Medical Officer. This internship provides a deeper insight into the role of society, culture and income on health, its prevention and treatment. Interns learn the craft of medicine with the art of social understanding and gain the ability to provide healthcare with minimal resources.
  • Students cover the 3 critical aspects of Service, Teaching and Research. While they are posted to the RHTC and the UHTC, they dedicate for learning through journal reviews, seminars and case presentations.
  • The department is involved in various mass vaccinations service in the areas of non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, geriatric care, and bio-medical waste management among general population.

Forensic Medicine

The Department of Forensic Medicine has Medico-Legal experts to provide students with an overview of the medico legal aspects of health sciences, components of toxicology and ethics.

  • The department works closely with the regional Police and Transport Departments, Government of Tamil Nadu through dedicated workshops and awareness programs.
  • The department is part of the Poison Control team and the Collaborative Child Response unit.
  • Students are trained in basic ethical issues and are also introduced to procedures such as post mortem, rape victim examination; rape accused examination and the various kinds of autopsies.
  • The department teaches skeletal remains examination & opinion for students.
  • Department also teaches students about medico legal issues related to RTA admitted in the hospital.

Microbiology

The department of Microbiology actively involves in imparting the science of Microbiology with innovative pedagogy practices in medical education. It offers quality clinical diagnostic services to hospital. The core areas of medical Microbiology are immunology, serology, HIV testing and surveillance, bacteriology enteric & non enteric culture, mycology and parasitology, virology in our hospital setting.

Our laboratories have expertise with world class infrastructure and automation to function independently.

  • The vital aspects of infection control and waste management are brought to the foreground by this Department. Prevention, diagnosis and cure are the major areas that outline the training provided by this department.
  • This department is responsible for testing, teaching and clinical research.
  • The course focuses on infectious diseases, how they are caused and what needs to be done to treat them. The department often takes to problem-based training approaches like role-play and model-making to teach students.
  • High-end infrastructure in the form of multiple labs distinguishes the Department of Microbiology. There are 7 labs, each dedicated to the sub-streams of aerobic, anaerobic, TB, virology, mycology, serology and parasitology.
  • Students training under this department have access to the Central Research Lab, Central Museum, which integrates the disciplines of Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Anatomy and Forensic Medicine under one roof, creating an environment of integrated learning and new discovery.

Pharmacology is the study of how drugs interact with living organisms to produce a change in function. A medical science concerned with the safe and effective use of medicines, it encompasses drug composition and properties, interactions, toxicology, therapy, and medical applications.

  • As a department, Pharmacology explores the effects drugs have on the human body and how they can be used during the incidence of disease.
  • The learning for UG students involves both theory and observation. Students are encouraged to take up short-term projects to go deeper into the subject.
  • The Department has its own Pharmaco-Vigilance Centre through which reports are collected to provide evidence to the National Centre as and when needed.
