Vision & Mission

General Surgery

Surgery is a medical speciality that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques to investigate and/or treat a pathological condition such as a disease or an injury, to help improve bodily function or appearance. Pre-operative and post-operative care comes together at the Department of General Surgery.

  • The department handles all major emergencies and planned surgical procedures including surgeries related to GIT, Plastic surgery, vascular surgery, hernia repair and Urology procedures.
  • UGs learn the subject through a combination of theory and practical. A special highlight is the experience they earn through Operation Theatre procedures, wherein they are allowed to observe surgical procedures in an audio-visual room.
  • UGs are also taught basic surgical skills like suturing, knotting, venous cut down, catheterisation, etc.
  • Students learn under the Well trained specialists of Urology, Pediatric Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Surgical Oncology and Plastic Surgery, trauma, all emergencies, hernia, hydrocoel, appendix, thyroid diseases, diseases involving skin, breast soft tissues, venous disorders like varicose veins, PVD among others.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBG) are the two surgical specialties dealing with the female reproductive organs. Obstetrics is the Medical & surgical specialty dealing with the care of a antenatal woman and post partum care for mother and child.

Gynecology is the branch of Medical & surgical specialty that deals diseases related to uterus, ovaries, infertility problems and diseases of women, especially of the reproductive organs.

  • The departmental objectives are to encourage medical graduates to practice the subject of Obstetrics and Gynecology with sincerity, while adhering to ethical principles.
  • The department places emphasis not just on course curriculum but also on a humaneness that can redefine the doctor-patient relationship.
  • The training involves both theory and practicals. Students also learn the vital aspects of history-taking, examination, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Near-miss and mortality meetings are a highlight of the Department of Obstetrics.
  • The presence of a blood bank ensures emergency cases are treated in time and lives are saved.
  • The facilities also make space for infertility and laparoscopic surgeries.
  • Breast feeding training for the postnatal mothers plays a vital role in the care of a mother.
  • A periodical antenatal visit for antenatal mothers every month in first 28 weeks, thrice a month till 36 weeks and every week thereafter till delivery for optimum care.
  • Detecting cervical cancer in the primary level by cervical screening with PAP smear with VIA , VILI, cervical biopsy are done at St. Peter’s Medical College Hospital and Research Institute.
  • The scope of IVI, IVF, and ICSI is high in the near future for infertility patients.
  • The students can learn advanced treatments strategies in OBG in their UG curriculum.
  • The investigative procedures like hysteroscopy, diagnostic hysterolaparoscopy for unexplained infertility are also done

Emergency Medicine

Emergency Department is managed by specially trained doctors who deliver a wide range of services. It includes initial assessment and early treatment in resuscitation, trauma, and medical and paediatric emergency including surgery and anesthesia.

  • The emergency care team is fully backed by consultants for all specialties and super specialties round the clock. These consultants will attend to these patients within a time and frame required treatment will be initiated.
  • The accident and trauma system has been fully integrated into this department and they strive to meet the needs of all injured or emergent patients requiring acute care facility, including complicated/ multiple injuries.
  • The goal is to match a facility’s resources with a patient’s needs so that optimal and cost-effective care is achieved.
  • This department provides a systematic approach that can provide “fast track” services for people with rapidly curable illness or injury, or organize transfer to higher centers in adequate time. This will ensure quicker treatment for patients to save the life.
  • Resuscitation is the most important section of an emergency room. The department is responsible for the immediate treatment of medical or surgical emergencies, for initiating lifesaving procedures in emergency situations, and for providing emergency care for other conditions, including chronic medical problems.
  • We have a wide range of emergency care and patient monitoring equipment, as required for life saving procedure.
  • We have common policies and procedure guidelines for provision of uniform emergency care.
  • The curriculum includes administrative components such as Leadership, System development, Legislation and Finances as well as operational and clinical components such as injury prevention and control, pre-hospital care and definitive care facilities including insurance scheme.

Radio-Diagnosis

  • Besides routine imaging and contrast investigations, special investigations like musculoskeletal ultrasonography, CT angiography, virtual scopies and imaging guided procedures are performed.
  • Vascular, gastrointestinal and hepato-biliary interventions are performed by highly skilled in-house and visiting consultants.
  • Through theory and practicals, undergraduates learn about imaging modalities and their applications. CT, MR, Ultrasound and Contra Studies are taught and students get a concise view of an otherwise vast subject.
  • The department boasts of some of the best imaging facilities including a 64 slide CT unit, stationary and portable ultrasound, head CT and mammography.
  • The centralised Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), which allows the department to work with other departments seamlessly, are important in terms of both academics as well as patient care.
  • Students also have access to the departmental museum and the digital library.

Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases and surgery of the visual pathways, including the eye, brain, and areas surrounding the eye, such as the lacrimal system and eyelids.

  • The department handles all emergency cases and elective surgical procedures like suture-less cataract surgery, Endo Nasal DCR, and laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy.
  • Students are trained in history taking, methods of examination and OPD instruments. Eventually, the training requires them to observe and then make case presentations.
  • A CD library has also been established for them to learn new, innovative surgical procedures.
  • Several CMEs are planned to conduct by the department in the field of Neuro Ophthalmology, Oculoplasty, Immunology, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Orbit, etc in the near future.
  • The staff of Ophthalmology is actively involved in developing integrated ophthalmic care, catering to patients through various camps.
  • Apart from basic ophthalmology equipment like A-scans, the department also features lasers, perimetry, B-scan and fundus camera.

Otorhinolaryngology (ENT)

Oto-Rhino-Laryngology is the study of Ear, Nose, and Throat conditions. It is also referred to as Head and Neck Surgery or Otorhinolaryngology.

Department of ENT

Department of ENT at St Peters Medical college, Hospital and Research Institute is focused in evaluation and management of diseases of Ear (ear infections, hearing loss, ear injuries etc), diseases of Nose and sinuses (acute sinusitis, chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, nasal bleeding etc), diseases of throat (tonsils and adenoid infection, voice / speech problems, swallowing disorders etc), and cancers of head & neck. The dept adheres to the requirements of the MCI with adequate facilities for undergraduate teaching programs. At present there are 150 undergraduate seats- MCI recognized. The department is fully functional with 3 OPDs to evaluate and treat patients. There is an audiology dept to assess hearing and a dedicated ear microscopy and endoscopy/laryngoscopy rooms to support the OPDs. Apart from routine management of ENT conditions, otomicroscopy, diagnostic nasal endoscopy, rigid fibreoptic laryngoscopy, pure tone audiometry, tympanometry etc are done in OPD. There is good patient inflow as required for undergraduate teaching purposes. Minor surgeries like slit earlobe repair, wound suturing, and biopsies are performed in minor OT

The ENT department is fully cabable of handling all ENT emergencies including tracheostomies and FB removal.

The Major OTs are fully equipped with operating microscope and motor drills for ear surgeries and endoscope with camera for endoscopic nasal surgeries. The OT is equipped to perform brochoscopy, esophagoscopy, direct laryngoscopy (DL scopy) and Microlaryngoscopy (ML scopy) surgeries.

Orthopedics

Orthopedic surgery or Orthopedics is the branch of surgery concerned with acute, chronic, traumatic, overuse injuries and other disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The vast universe of Orthopedics explores the well-being of joints in the human body, covering illnesses and accidents causing bone fractures that can disable an individual and prevent them from living pain-free.

  • The Department of Orthopedics is well established in our institution and covers all sub specialities including trauma, arthroplasty, arthroscopy, spine surgery and pediatric orthopedics.
  • We also provide round the clock emergency service in trauma and accident care.
  • Well established operation theatre with modern equipments to perform all types of surgery including multiple fractures and spine injuries.
  • Learning is through routine classes as well as bedside teaching.
  • The teaching programme is rigorous and requires residents to attend classes every day of the week. This culminates in the Grand Rounds, where cases from the previous week are discussed and analysed.
  • Students also have access to other related departments such as spine, arthroscopy and orthoplasty, making the training relevant and whole.
  • The department closely collaborates with Radiology, Pathology, Oncology, Microbiology, Orthotics, Prosthetics and Physiotherapy.
  • The department provides access to the Advanced Learning Center (ALC), where at the Surgical Skills Lab; residents can practice dissection on simulators.

Psychiatry

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, prevention of mental, emotional, behavioral, including substance use disorders.

  • The Department of Psychiatry is trained in Disaster Management, an aspect rare in most institutions.
  • Specialists treat all psychiatric problems, anxiety neurosis, MDPs
  • Undergraduates come to this department for a one-month clinical posting. They mostly learn through observation and discussions.
  • We also have facilities for de-addiction for alcoholic patients.
  • At the UG level, students are required to undertake proper history taking, primary patient care, and look after both inpatients as well as outpatients under specialists supervision. Much of their learning also comes from the fact that the department organizes district mental healthcare centres and day care centres for patients. The department also allies with the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation.

Dermatology

Dermatology is the branch of medicine that deals with hair, nails, skin and its diseases. It is a specialty with both medical and surgical aspects.

  • Dermatologists in our St. Peter’s Medical College Hospital treat diseases in the widest sense and address cosmetic problems of the skin, scalp, hair, and nails. The department also incorporates venereology (the branch of medicine for sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS).
  • As a subject, dermatology represents clinical, pathological, and surgical perspectives.
  • The training involves students learning the basics of diagnosing skin problems, their clinical aspects, and ways to manage and treat them effectively and economically.
  • Apart from real-time observation, students have access to audio-visual facilities through which they can observe procedures being performed.
  • In addition to learning about dermatological problems and their management, UG students are also introduced to cosmetic dermatology. They learn how to counsel and refer patients to specialists.
  • The department has various kinds of lasers, phototherapy units, and high-end microscopes. The facilities also include those needed to perform minor surgical procedures.
  • Faculty research projects are often funded by external organizations such as Tamil Nadu Dermatological Society and Indian Association of Dermatologists.

Respiratory Medicine

  • Department of Respiratory Medicine at St. Peter’s Medical College Hospital and Research Institute provides pulmonary critical care & diseases related to the lungs.
  • Pulmonologists are specially trained in diseases and conditions of the Respiratory System like Asthma, allergy, COPD, Tuberculosis, Pneumonia, ILDs, Sarcoidosis, Lung malignancy, pleural diseases and other complicated chest infections.
  • Undergraduates are taught to take detailed history of the patients and examination of the Respiratory System. They get acquainted with procedures that are performed on out patients and learn to train patients about the usage of respiratory devices. They are also introduced to Spirometry and its interpretation.
  • Students are given knowledge on Pleural aspiration, Pleural biopsy, Intercostal tube drainage and Bronchoscopy procedure.
  • The department is actively involved in the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP).
  • The department has a Sleep Lab which has facilities for Complete Polysomnography and Limited Polysomnography which is beneficial to the students involved in research activities as they learn about the Sleep related Breathing disorders and its management.

Pediatrics

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with medical care of infants, children and adolescents.

  • Pediatric Department atSt. Peter’s Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Hosur aims at providing preventive and curative service to pediatric and neonates and strives to provide excellent tertiary healthcare to children in and around hosur.
  • Our Department also helps in identifying and treating physically and mentally challenged children.
  • The Department adheres to the requirement of MCI with adequate facility for undergraduate teaching programs.
  • At present there are 150 under graduate seats –MCI recognized.
  • The Department is fully functional with 2 OPDs to evaluate and treat patients.
  • There is a level 3 NICU and PICU and our Department is fully capable of treating sick neonatal and pediatric child by neonatologist & critical care intensivist. The department works closely with neurology, physiotherapy, biochemistry, pathology and microbiology.

General Medicine

  • It includes training in primary patient care and is the foundation for vital super specialties such as Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, etc.
  • This department provides the much sought after outpatient and inpatient services apart from providing comprehensive support to the intensive care units.
  • The department focuses on the method of micro-teaching, where one faculty member is allotted to a small batch of students. This allows for greater student-teacher interaction, and provides an edge in learning.
  • Students get to learn about the nervous, cardiovascular, endocrinal, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems in the body. The training also exposes them to the super-specialities of genetics, immunology, geriatrics and nephrology.
  • For UG students, problem-based learning approach forms the backbone of their training. They also participate in interesting various subject-specific activities on all days of the week.
  • The department has access to the Advanced Learning Center (ALC)’s Skills Lab where clinical skills are demonstrated. Simulation facilities allow students to observe as well as practice complex techniques.
  • The Department of Medicine also houses Cardiology division in our in hospital conducting various screening programs for high risk individuals to reduce mortality from acute heart attack.
  • Undergraduates can get acquaintance with Cardiology as a super-specialty within the subject of General Medicine.
  • In their training, they get to know about clinical manifestations of heart problems and signs and symptoms that may be reported. They also get trained in basic diagnosis.
  • In the first year, they are learning about complex cardiac diseases, how to run an OPD and how to perform Echocardiogram. In the second and third years, they learn the diagnosis and probable interventions.
  • Along with well-equipped ICUs and OTs, the department features adult and pediatric Echo facilities.
  • In addition, it also has a non-invasive facility for dobutamine stress echo and treadmill outfit.

Anaesthesiology

This refers to the specialty pertaining to partial or complete loss of sensation with or without loss of consciousness by administration of a drug, usually by injection or inhalation so as to mitigate pain especially during surgical procedures.

  • The department manages the course of a surgical patient from the preoperative phase to the post-operative phase, including critical care.
  • Drawing from its core of anesthesiology services, the department has extended into outpatient based Pre-Anesthesia Clinic, Theatre Based Anesthesia Services, Post-Operative Care Unit (PACU), and management of a high dependency unit like critical care (Ventilator support). The department’s services also include integral management of accidents and emergencies.
  • As a part of its Acute Pain Services, the department has expanded its role and scope to cover pain management in acute situations. It has also undertaken partial and complete pain relief in chronic cases as a part of its Pain Clinic.
  • The department is an indispensable part of Perinatology units for relieving labour pain.
  • UGs practice elementarily, but under supervision during internship. They are then introduced to airway management and vascular access procedures.
